What You'll Learn
How security groups control user access
The difference between permissions and security groups
How to create and edit security groups
How permissions work across different license types
Overview
Security groups control what users can see and do in Uptick. Instead of setting permissions for individual users, you assign users to security groups that have specific permissions enabled.
Who Can Manage Security Groups?
By default, users in the System Administrator, Owner, or Manager security groups can manage permissions—provided the "Can configure security groups" permission is enabled.
How Security Groups Work
Key Concepts
Permissions are group-based, not user-based
You cannot set permissions for individual users
Users inherit permissions from all security groups they belong to
Assign users to one or multiple security groups
Multiple groups = combined permissions
If a user belongs to multiple security groups, they receive all permissions from every group
Permissions are additive—you cannot remove a permission by adding another group
How Permissions Vary by License Type
Different license types are affected by permissions differently:
License Type | Permission Impact |
Desk | Affected by all permissions except those marked for the Uptick App |
Field | Affected only by permissions marked with a mobile phone icon (for the Uptick App) |
Contractor | Affected only by permissions for the Contractor Portal (tasks, documents, assets) |
Customer | Can only access the Customer Portal—no permission controls available |

Common Permission Terms

Important Limitations
Cannot Delete Security Groups via UI
Custom security groups cannot be deleted through the Uptick Web Platform. Contact Uptick Support if you need a custom security group removed.
No "View Own Profile Only" Permission
Uptick does not currently support a permission that allows users to view only their own profile while restricting access to other users. Permissions under the Accounts category apply to all user accounts, not just the user's own profile.
