Setup
You will need the ESMs module turned on in your workspace. If you do not see this in your main menu, reach out to [email protected]. Asset presets, described below, are available without the ESMs module.
You will also need the following permissions in your security group:
Can change site configuration settings.
Can configure the asset library.
Can view property list page.
Can view property.
Can create assets.
Can update and archive assets.

Essential Safety Measures (ESMs) are features in a building that must be maintained to ensure the safety of occupants during emergencies, and are separate from the assets on the property.
How to add an ESM to a property
Navigate to Customer Data > Properties and View a property.
Open the ESMs tab and click + Create ESM. To add several ESMs at once, click Load Preset instead (see Apply a preset to a property).
Select the Type and the Contractor (defaults to the Default Contractor representing your company). Use the Set… links to add any optional details, then click Create — or Create and add another.
Additional options (the "Set…" links)
Overwrite label: Leave blank to auto-generate the label from the ESM type, or enter a value to override it.
Set additional elements: Add the additional elements that make up this ESM.
Set contractor details: Add a contractor note and reference for the ESM.
Set tags and visibility: Tag the ESM and control whether it is visible on the Customer Portal and reports.
Change applicable standards: Set the Standard of Maintenance, Installation and Performance for this ESM. If left unchanged, these default from the ESM type.
Set internal note: Add a note for internal communication or reference.
How to create an ESM type
To create an ESM type, expand the Essential Safety Measures section when creating an asset type and tick the Essential Safety Measure field.
Available fields on an ESM type
Essential Safety Measure: Marks this asset type as an Essential Safety Measure. ESMs are displayed separately from assets.
Default Standard of Maintenance, Default Standard of Installation and Default Standard of Performance: If completed, an ESM on the property inherits these.
Standard excerpt: Additional information or excerpts from the standard.
How to configure asset presets
What are asset presets?
Asset presets let you group multiple asset types, including ESM types, together and apply them to properties in bulk. This saves time when working with similar properties that require the same set of assets or ESMs.
When to use asset presets:
You manage multiple properties with identical asset or ESM requirements (e.g., schools, aged care facilities, or office buildings).
You need to quickly set up assets or ESMs for new properties.
You want to ensure consistency across similar property types.
Example: A university, elementary school, and daycare may all require the same ESMs under the same standards. Instead of adding each ESM individually to every classroom or building, create a preset once and apply it to all similar properties.
Create or edit an asset preset
Navigate to Control Panel > Asset Types.
Click Asset presets.
Click + Create to make a new preset, or click Edit on an existing preset.
Complete the fields:
Name: Give your preset a clear, descriptive name (e.g., "School Classroom ESMs" or "Office Building Standard").
Items: Select the asset types to include. The preset list shows these in the Included asset types column.
Click Save Preset.
Create multiple presets for different property types, and review them regularly so they reflect current compliance requirements.
Apply a preset to a property
Navigate to Customer Data > Properties and select the property.
Open the ESMs tab or the Assets tab.
Click Load Preset.
Select the preset you want to apply. The asset types in the preset are ticked. Untick any that the property does not have and, if you use asset tags, select the tags to apply.
Click Load preset.
One asset is created for each ticked asset type, in one step. You can then customise individual details (such as location, contractor, or standards) as needed.
Loading a preset does not overwrite existing ESMs on the property — it only adds the ESMs from the preset.
